Sundance Review: Grabbers - Jon Wright

Grabbers

In the Q and A for Grabbers, someone asked where they got their inspiration from, I immediate turned to my friend and said “Tremors.” Two seconds later, Kevin Lehane (the writer) answered “Tremors”. Sure enough, I feel fully confident in saying that Jon Wright’s Grabbers is this generation’s aquatic equivalent.

Set in a small fishing village on an island off the coast of Ireland, the most motley of crews must defend themselves from tentaclesquidleeches that have a thirst for human blood. Alcoholism and hilarity ensues. A wonderful throwback to the monster comedies of the ‘80s, Grabbers can best be described as downright fun. Wright (or maybe Lehane) said that Gremlins was another inspiration to this movie, and again that is wholly apparent on watching the film, not because they use similar jokes, but because the feel of the movie is something so enjoyable with that hint of suspense and scare. Superb acting and surprisingly strong special effects round out this movie as something that should definitely be watched. It may not win any Oscars for Best Picture, but it’s definitely a movie that will become a staple for this generation’s comedy-horrors.
